Global black tea production in 2018 rose 3.14 per cent over 2017, due to a rise in Kenya’s output.

“Our compilation shows that the global black tea production has risen to 2102.79 million kgs (mkg) from 2038.76 mkg in 2017. This increase of 64.03 mkg marks a growth of 3.14 per cent,” Rajesh Gupta, compiler of Global Tea Digest 2018, told BusinessLine.

Sri Lanka reported lower output due to unfavourable weather, with production falling to 276.48 mkg from 281.47 mkg, marking a loss of 4.99 mkg or 1.77 per cent. On the other hand, Kenya produced 395.51 mkg, a growth of 48.53 mkg or 14 per cent.

“The Tea Board of India has released production data till November but revised some of its earlier production estimates. Now, overall production in 11 months of 2018 was more than 2017,” Gupta noted. “In 11 months of 2018, India produced 1,257.67 mkg against 1,250.37 mkg in the year ago period — a marginal growth of 0.58 per cent,” Gupta said.

India continued to top the global black tea production table followed by Kenya and Sri Lanka.
