Spot turmeric prices improved in Erode markets on Monday following upcountry demand.
“Traders have received some upcountry demand and so they are buying huge stocks at a higher price. Of the 8,800 bags that arrived, buyers procured 5,500 bags. We expect more upcountry demand within couple of days and prices may increase,” said RKV Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.
He said the price of the yellow spice is stable in the futures market and also at a par with other turmeric sale centres. Because of quality and demand, the price of the Salem finger turmeric price was up ₹300 a quintal while that of local varieties was up ₹200.
At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard, the finger variety old turmeric was sold at ₹5,414-8,699 a quintal; the root variety ₹5,286-7,814.
Salem Turmeric: The finger variety went for ₹6,788-9,819 and the root variety ₹6,519-8,391. Of the total arrival of 2,200 bags,2,040 were sold.
At the Regulated Market Committee, the finger turmeric traded at ₹7,861-8,865 and the root turmeric ₹6,919-7,939. Of the 1,680 bags on sale, 1,480 were traded.
At the Erode Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric was sold at ₹7,889-8,799 and the root variety ₹6,989-7,899. All the 1,124 bags found takers.
At the Gobichettipalayam Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Society, the finger turmeric fetched ₹7,218-8,789 and the root variety ₹6,900-7,899. All the 415 bags were sold.
