Bharti Airtel made rapid strides to emerge the top gainer on the BSE just ahead of the close of trading on the first day of the new year.
At 2.55 p.m. it was trading at Rs 336.60, up 1.86 per cent on its previous close of Rs 330.45.
Power sector stock NTPC also charged up to Rs 138.05 in late trading, a 0.91 per cent gain on its prevous close of Rs 136.80.
Coal India extended its gains to trade at Rs Rs 292.30 in late trading as against its overnight close of Rs 290. This represented a gain of 0.79 per cent.
Hero MotoCorp was firm but it had shed some of its early gains to quote at Rs 2,090, up 0.73 per cent on its overnight close of Rs 2,074.80.
The GAIL stock was trading at Rs 343.50 or 0.59 per cent higher than its earlier close.
