Amazon India plans to generate clean energy by installing solar panels on the roof of its fulfilment centres and sorting sites in India. It has installed 1,000 kilowatts (kW) of solar power panels at its fulfilment centre in Shamshabad, Hyderabad, and 600 kW at its fulfilment centre in Jamalpur, Haryana.

By the end of 2018, Amazon India plans to generate close to 8,000 kW of solar energy. Installations will cover an area of approximately 1 million sq ft, reduce carbon-dioxide emissions by around 9,000 tonnes a year and provide energy to support the building’s annual energy needs.

The company plans to further deploy large-scale solar panel systems on the roof of five more fulfilment centres and sorting sites in Bengaluru, Mumbai and Chennai, while expanding its existing capacity in Delhi.

Akhil Saxena, Vice-President, Customer Fulfilment, Amazon India, in a statement said, “At Amazon, we are putting our scale and inventive culture to work on sustainability and protecting the environment. The installation of the solar panels at fulfilment centres in Hyderabad and Delhi reinstates this commitment and by the end of 2018 we plan to expand this installation to an additional seven Amazon operations sites in India.”

“The investment in solar energy systems in India is in line with Amazon’s vision to deploy solar systems at 50 fulfilment and sorting centres globally by 2020,” he said.
