China on Sunday reported 57 new cases of Covid-19, its highest daily count since April, according to reports.
There have been growing concerns of a resurgence with new cases being reported after two months. The cases have been linked mostly to a meat and vegetable market in south Beijing, AFP reported.
The outbreak of domestic cases had been curbed with a strict lockdown. New cases emerged as restrictions were lifted. The National Health Commission of China had said that 36 cases out of the newly reported cases are domestic infections in Beijing. Two other cases reported in the Liaoning province were close contacts of the Beijing cases according to the report.
The remaining cases reported on Sunday were Chinese nationals returning from abroad.
The new cluster of infections had led to authorities imposing a partial lockdown, People in 11 residential estates near Beijing’s largest market have been ordered to stay home.
Beijing has shut down multiple markets across the city, including its largest wholesale food market, the Xinfadi market as per media reports.
China had relaxed its restrictions in March urging people to remain vigilant after imposing a strict lockdown across the country for months.
The outbreak that had originated in Wuhan, China has spread globally with 7.7 million cases being reported so far across the globe and the death toll surpassing 4.2 lakh as per reports.
