Technological excellence and standard of living go hand in hand with advancements in basic sciences, according to Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

He said this while giving away Pratibha science scholarships instituted by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE) for the first time to 82 students here.

The State Government is considering increasing the scholarship amount from next year, the Chief Minister added. The Pratibha scheme for nurturing scientific temperament in students at the school level was first in the country, too.

Chandy expressed happiness that 91 per cent Pratibha scholars were girls. The students were awarded a certificate and a sum of Rs 12,000 for a year.

V.N. Rajasekharan Pillai, executive vice-president of KSCETE, was present on the occasion.
