The novel coronavirus continues to tighten its grip in India as the number of cases has crossed 1.6 lakh on Thursday, as per media reports.

The rising number has made India the ninth-worst affected country by the virus. India has even surpassed China’s official count in the number of deaths, data from state governments, and America's Johns Hopkins University revealed.

With 1,65,386 cases, India has reported double the number of cases in China at 84,106, an online real-time tally maintained by Johns Hopkins University disclosed.

India also surpassed China with as many as 4,711 deaths, compared to 4,638 by Thursday night, the data showed.

In terms of the total number of confirmed cases, the US tops the chart with with over 17 lakh cases, while other countries with more cases than India are Brazil, Russia, UK, Spain, Italy, France, and Germany. While Turkey is now ranked 10th, China is at 14th place and below Iran, Peru, and Canada.

The US also tops the number of deaths with more than 1 lakh fatalities, followed by UK, Italy, France, Spain, Brazil, Belgium, Mexico, Germany, and Iran in the top 10. India is ranked 13th now after Canada and Netherlands at the 11th and 12th places, respectively.

Worst hit cities in India

The Union Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba convened a meeting with municipal commissioners and district magistrates of the 13 worst-hit cities in the country, including Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai.

In India, Maharashtra ( 59,546) has the highest number of coronavirus cases followed by Tamil Nadu (19372), Delhi (16281), and Gujarat (15,562).
