Old typewriters reappeared in the Government offices of Mizoram and the staff worked in candle light due to crippling power cuts in the state.

According to reports, computers were rendered useless in the offices due to power cuts and ramshackle typewriters came in handy. People shivered without room heating system in the winter chill.

Mizoram has been reeling under acute shortage of electricity resulting in disruption of normal work all over the state.

All the newspapers in south Mizoram’s Lunglei town were not published on Friday due to absence of power on Thursday and a number of dailies failed to hit the streets in Aizawl due to the same problem.

The entire state plunged into darkness on Thursday which continued till night. Massive load-shedding was also reported today.

Power Grid Corporation of India took the entire day on Thursday to do repair work in Luangmual and Zuangtui 132 KV sub-stations resulting in power shutdown in the state for more than 12 hours.

State power and electricity department officials said that while Mizoram received only half of its power requirement on that day, requirement of additional transformers to receive sufficient power resulted in frequent load-shedding.

Scarcity of electricity and cooking gas in the state would pose a serious threat to the environment, environmentalists said.

Charcoal was selling like hot cakes with people trying to warm themselves in winter nights and many families using it for cooking.
