Officials of the State Bank of India’s two branches in Chennai’s Beach Road were not being allowed to enter the premises even a day after the fire that broke out on Saturday afternoon was brought under control.
This is because the strength of the building is yet to be ascertained. “A team of engineers and fire brigade are inside the building to assess the damage. Only after ensuring the roof’s strength, we will be allowed inside,” said a spokesperson of the bank. After a fire broke out on the second floor of the building on Saturday, over a dozen fire tenders fought the blaze and brought it under control after a few hours.
According to the official, all employees who were in the building at the time of the accident were safe.
“But, we have no idea whether all documents, currency notes and jewellery are intact. Though we usually keep them in a safe, it is difficult to say anything concrete as we do not know the extent of damage caused to the strong room,” he said.
The bank, however, is organising to operate these branches in alternative locations from Monday morning. The Fire Department will continue with its operations through Sunday night to assist bankers in salvaging the safety lockers.
