VS Achuthanandan, the 91-year-old Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, former Chief Minister and a founding member of the CPI(M), has been effectively sidelined from the party’s internal affairs.
He has been dropped from the party’s Kerala State secretariat, of which he had been a part for most of the past half century, by the State committee. The new 15-member secretariat, chosen by the State committee on Saturday in the presence of party general secretary Sitaram Yechuri, did not include the senior leader who is now viewed as a rebel by the official leadership. His exclusion was expected, as he had not been included in the new State committee which was selected at the State conference held in February following his ‘boycott’ half way through the conference.
Achuthanandan was also dropped from the central committee at the party congress held at Visakhapatnam recently since he had crossed the age of 80. However, he was made a special invitee. Being the only surviving founding member of the party he had been included in the previous congress as well.
However, he will continue as the party’s face and voice for some more time.
