Among the major Indian cities, Ahmedabad has the lowest attrition rate, while Hyderabad and Bangalore have the highest, according to human resources solutions firm TeamLease Services Pvt Ltd.

While the job-seeker looks for a good job and a decent salary and continues his/her quest, industries try to get the ‘best fit candidate’ for their openings, even by proactively focusing on engagement and retention of employees in order to not loose good talent.

The irony is that neither the job-seeker is satisfied with the job he/she has, nor is the employer completely satisfied with the candidate's profile, Neeti Sharma, Vice-President, TeamLease, told Business Line. This leads to attrition.

In the last 12 months, Hyderabad’s attrition rate was 16.89 per cent, while in the last three months it was 11.1 per cent. Hyderabad was followed by Bangalore (with corresponding figures being 16.8 per cent/9.2 per cent), Delhi (15.91/11.38), Chennai (14.05/10.1), Pune (13.04/9.76) and Kolkata (12.01/9.23). India’s financial capital Mumbai (9.43/6.71) and Gujarat’s financial capital Ahmedabad (8.9/7.9) have the lowest attrition rates, she said.

In most sectors, the quarterly attrition rates stayed below 11 per cent. ITeS (16.1/10.89) and infrastructure (15.45/11.21) have had the highest attrition rates and contributed the most to both annual and quarterly attrition.

Sharma said most industries are facing huge challenges in controlling attrition across job levels. Industries such as manufacturing and engineering see lesser attrition, but sectors such as retail, FMCG, IT and ITeS find it difficult to retain talent consistently.

The TeamLease Foundation would soon be setting up India’s first vocational training university, the TeamLease University, in Gujarat, as well as an Institute of Job-Oriented Training near Ahmedabad, to train job-seekers in association with various industries.
