West Bengal Finance Minister and Chairman of the Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers on GST, Amit Mitra, has termed the Union Budget as “directionless” and “meandering.”

Mitra said the budget lacked vision and that there was “nothing in it” for the common man.

“We are studying the fine print. But, our first impression is that the Budget is directionless, meandering and lacks vision. There is nothing in it for the common man or for West Bengal,” he said at the State Secretariat on Monday.

The Trinamool Congress to criticised the Budget and called it a “hopeless” one. The party website in a point-wise rebuttal of various proposals said Arun Jaitley has in his speech not detailed out the changes in the FDI policy.

“It is shrouded in an annexure and opens up 100 per cent FDI in many sectors. Why can’t the government be transparent,” the party said, adding that no clear outline has been mentioned for job creation.

It also blamed the government for not coming out with any major tax reforms to benefit the middle class. The party has also maintained that the Centre was not providing funds to the State for various social sector schemes.
