The Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC) has urged the Karnataka Government to re-introduce uniformity in VAT laws.
Participating at a pre-budget interaction with the Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, who also holds the finance portfolio, A N Chandramouli, President-BCIC, submitted a memorandum and urged him to bring changes in tax rates.
The chamber has sought restoring tax rates under Karnataka VAT to pre-hike levels of July 31, 2012 and reduction in tax rate and road tax on hybrid vehicles.
It has also requested for reduction of tax rate on cigarettes to 17 per cent from 22 per cent and reduction in tax rate (Karnataka Sales Tax) on diesel to 20 per cent from 25 per cent.
As for exemptions, BCIC has requested for sale of goods to SEZ units to be exempt from VAT. Sale of goods to educational institutions should be exempt from VAT and TDS on industrial canteens, which are run on no-profit basis, must be exempted (schools, colleges, hospitals, co-operative societies and other autonomous bodies, factories), it said.
