Officers of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Thursday, rang up the Trinamool Congress Bhavan – headquarters of the All India Trinamool Congress – wanting to talk to the party general secretary Subrata Bakshi.

Bakshi, who is currently out of town, was not available for comments. However, party secretary general, Partha Chatterjee, confirmed the development.

“An officer identifying himself from CBI had spoken to a party worker to enquire about Subrata Bakshi. He is out of town at the moment and the worker apprised the CBI sleuth of the same,” he told reporters during a press conference.

“The officer asked for Bakshi’s number and was given the same,” he added.

It was not known for what reason the CBI had sought the whereabouts of the party’s national general secretary.

Political Conspiracy

When asked about the reasons for the call, Chatterjee alleged that it was a “political conspiracy” to malign the Trinamool’s image and was made shortly after the party (TMC) announced a protest programme against the land bill on April 8.

“The CBI swung into action after we declared to hold a protest rally against the land ordinance. It is acting politically before the elections,” he said.

According to the secretary general, before the last by-polls at Bongaon and Krishnaganj, the CBI had tried to do the same thing.

He also questioned the timing of the phone-call to the All India General Secretary of the party just before municipal polls due in the State on April 18 and April 25.

“The CBI has lost its credibility. It is acting at the behest of a political party,” Chatterjee said.

In an earlier instance the TMC had last month received a notice from the central investigating agency inquiring about its earnings from paintings and other sources. According to sources, the notice was addressed to the TMC General Secretary.
