Kerala should explore more opportunities in the information technology space, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has said.

The State, he said, had missed lot of opportunities in the past in the IT sector and should ensure that such mistakes are not repeated. He also stressed the need for collective efforts to avoid such situations in future.

He was speaking at a function organised by the Kerala Management Association (KMA) to give away the KMA Management Leadership Award 2013 to IBS Group Executive Chairman V.K. Mathews here.

The Chief Minister said that a mechanism has to be put in place to absorb all students who pass out from various institutions in the State itself rather than exporting talent. The State can achieve this through dedication and a clear vision, he added.

Nasscom Chairman Krishnakumar Natarajan, KMA President S.R. Nair, V.K. Mathews and K.N. Shastri spoke.

Later the Nasscom Chairman told reporters that the IT sector in the country is expected to grow by 12-14 per cent in the current fiscal against 10.2 per cent achieved in the previous year.

He pointed out that the sector contributes 7.5 per cent to the gross domestic product of the country and employs about 30 lakh people directly and about one crore indirectly. By 2020, the total number of employees in the sector will be 60 lakh, he added.

Nasscom launched 10,000 start-ups in the last ten years.
