The Congress on Monday wondered how Gitanjali Gems’ Mehul Choksi, who is an accused in the Punjab National Bank scam, was “allowed to leave the country” when a Chandigarh court had already declared him an absconder in August 2017.
The Congress demanded that the Centre come up with a White Paper on the country’s banking sector.
“[Prime Minister Narendra] Modi addressed him hamare Mehul bhai at an event. Now he must explain how Choksi escaped law,” said Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari.
He accused the Prime Minister of silence on critical issues. “Who is responsible for facilitating the escape of Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi and their families?” Tewari asked.
“What is your reaction to the report that BJP President’s son’s company grew 16,000 times in a year? The price of Rafale jet increased 3 times in the new deal. What is the benchmark price of each jet now? At what price did the government finally purchase the Rafale jets?” Tewari added.
The Left parties, too, demanded answers from the Prime Minister. “Crony capitalism has been taken to new heights by this government. Modi government has much to hide. It must make public the list of big defaulters of bank loans. Why is this list and the list of industrialists accompanying Modi abroad a national secret?” asked CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury.
