The Dakshina Kannada district administration has seized 177 vehicles involved in illegal transportation of sand.
Acting on complaints of illegal transportation of sand to other States (and of overloading of sand in vehicles), the district administration directed Assistant Commissioners, Tahsildars, and officials of the Department of Mines and Geology to seize vehicles of the sand smugglers.
On April 20, officials seized 17 vehicles in Mangaluru taluk, 15 each in Belthangady and Puttur taluks, 10 in Bantwal taluk, 18 in Sullia taluk, eight in Moodbidri hobli and one in Kadaba. On April 21, they seized 21 vehicles in Mangaluru taluk, 36 in Bantwal taluk, 10 in Sullia taluk, nine in Belthangady taluk, eight in Puttur taluk, and three in Moodbidri hobli. In all, 177 vehicles were seized during the two-day operation by the officials. Dakshina Kannada deputy commissioner AB Ibrahim said the administration would continue the crack down.
