As Karnataka is gearing for ‘Invest Karnataka 2015 Global Investors Meet’ in Bengaluru in February, the industry bodies in Dakshina Kannada are hopeful of getting plastic and pharma parks in the region.

BA Nazeer, President of Canara Plastic Manufacturers’ and Traders’ Association (CPMTA), told Business Line that the recent commissioning of the polypropylene unit by Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd offers opportunities for plastic industries in the area.

Plastic park The association had requested the Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers to set up a plastic park in Mangaluru. The Minister had requested the State to send a proposal in this regard.

Rammohan Pai Maroor, President of Kanara Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), said State Health Minister UT Khader, had recently held a meeting with the district administration to discuss the possibility of setting up a pharma park in the region.

Khader asked the district administration to provide at least 100 acres of land for the project.

Stating that KCCI is in favour of establishment of a pharma park in the district, he said it would help in the industrial development of the region.

Joint Director of District Industries Centre of Dakshina Kannada Gokuldas Nayak said the Industries Department has identified land at Kanara Industrial Area at Mudipu in Bantwal taluk and Shibaroor in Mangaluru taluk for the establishment of a plastic park. The Centre will extend a grant of ₹40 crore for the project, he said.

Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada AB Ibrahim said the district administration has suggested Kanara Industrial Area at Mudipu for the establishment of a pharma park.

The industry bodies expressed hopes that the approval for these two projects will help attract investments at the ‘Invest Karnataka’ meet, which is scheduled to be held in Bengaluru on February 4-6.
