Illegal granite mining in Tamil Nadu has cost the exchequer over Rs 1.11 lakh crore apart from innumerable loss of human life.
The Sagayam Committee has estimated the loss to the State exchequer to be over ₹1.11 lakh crore due to illegal granite mining in Madurai district, the committee's counsel M Radhakrishnan told the Madras High Court.
There has also been innumerable human loss, he told the first bench hearing the case.
The court had last year appointed former Madurai Collector U Sagayam, an IAS officer, as a special officer to probe illegal granite mining activities.
The committee submitted a 600-page report to the Court last November.
