Development of physical infrastructure is essential for growth of economy, said P.P. Upadhya, MD of MRPL.

Inaugurating a technical seminar on ‘Innovative infrastructure for incredible India’, organised by the Association of Consulting Civil Engineers in Mangalore on Friday, he said the country is emerging as a fast growing economy. In such a situation, infrastructure is essential for exploring growth potential.

There is a need to enhance the designed capacity of manufacturing units. He said there is ample scope in education and training the manpower to take up infrastructure works.

Highlighting some issues such as cost and time overrun in industrial construction activities, he said civil engineers play major role in tackling them. The cost and time overruns delay the projects in many cases.

He suggested that the civil engineers’ meet should come out with a method to execute and tackle escalation in project costs.

B.S. Basavarajaiah, former principal of Karnataka Regional Engineering College, Mangalore, and K.S. Babunarayan, professor at Department of Civil Engineering at National Institute of Technology, Karnataka, delivered lectures on the occasion.

B. Ashok Kumar, Vice-President (South), Association of Consulting Civil Engineers, presided over the meeting. Vijay Vishnu Mayya, chairman of the Association of Consulting Civil Engineers (Mangalore centre), welcomed the gathering.

The association also conducted ‘Awards, Convention, and Consultants Colloquium’ where the Association of Consulting Civil Engineers’ national awards for 2012 were given away to the winners.
