A statue of APJ Abdul Kalam was unveiled at Advanced Systems Laboratory (ASL), part of the chain of labs under the Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) today.

K Rama Rao, former Associate Director of DRDL and classmate of  Kalam, MSR Prasad, Director, DRDL and several former senior scientists and staff were present during the occasion to pay homage to Kalam, who passed away a year ago.

Tessy Thomas, Director, ASL & Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad said, “It was a proud moment for all of us on this occasion in remembering the noble soul, as a scientist, academician, people’s president and more than everything a great human being”.

The former President, Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister and Chief of DRDO, Kalam spent a good part of his career in Hyderabad. He was instrumental in starting the RCI and playing a significant role in the development of missiles under the Integrated Guided Missiles Development Programme launched in 1980.

Five missiles, Agni, Prithvi, Nag, Trishul and Akash were taken up for development with the DRDL as the lead lab. Kalam was also instrumental in forging alliances with hospitals, private industry in launching societal missions that intended to take the spin offs of defence technologies to help the poor from here.
