Karnataka is committed to implementing a total ban on Endosulphan pesticide, the Health Minister, Aravind Limabavali said here today.
Replying to the issue raised by BJP member Ravisubramnya in the state assembly, he said government has taken steps to conduct surveys in Dakshin Kannada, Udupi and Uttar Kannada districts where cases relating to the side effects of using Endosulphan had been reported.
A survey in Dakshin Kannada had stated that 1907 people have been affected and in Uttara Kannada, where 383 people have so far been affected.
Rejecting members’ suggestions to adopt the Kerala rehabilitation model for the affected, he said Karnataka’s package including one-time pension scheme was better compared to the neighbouring state.
Limbavalli said 19 hospitals have been set up in Dakshin Kannada to treat people affected by Endosulfan and permission had been given to upgrade the Public Health Centres at Kokkada in Belthangdy taluk to 30 beds.
