The Karnataka government wants to implement AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) of the Union Ministry of Urban Development in 25 towns in the State, according to State Minister for Urban Development Vinay Kumar Sorake.

Addressing presspersons in Mangaluru on Monday, Sorake said 25 towns with population of 1 lakh and above in the State would come under AMRUT. The Centre and the State government will share the costs equally.

Stating that Mangaluru and Udupi towns have been included under AMRUT, he said ‘detailed project reports’ for AMRUT towns would be prepared soon.

Water supply, sewerage facilities, storm water drains to reduce flooding, and pedestrian, non-motorised and public transport facilities and parking spaces are some of the thrust areas of AMRUT.

Smart cities On the development of smart cities in the State, Sorake said the Centre has issued certain guidelines for the development of smart cities. The proposals of six city corporations will be sent to the Central government for the development of smart cities, he said.

To make TDR (transfer of development rights) attractive for land losers, the State government has increased the TDR from 1.5 times of the cost of land to two times of the cost of the land in the Karnataka Town and Country Planning (amendment) Bill 2015. The Bill was tabled in the State Assembly last week.

Plans are also afoot to bring all the city corporations in the State under a commissionerate headed by a Commissioner. The establishment of a commissionerate will help improve administration, he added.
