Lately, I took a walk through the busy streets of Mumbai and came across a place which surprised me with its narrow alleys and the options it offered one to buy from. It is none other than ‘Chor Bazaar’ situated near Bhendi bazaar, as the name suggest Chor Bazaar literally translates to the thieves market which was the result of British mispronunciation for Shor Bazaar (noisy market).
Till date the market is one of the noisiest in the city with vehicles blowing their horns after every 5 seconds, even on an empty street.
The market is home to old vintage articles like telephones, clocks, old cameras, old cutlery which is sourced from cruise liners, old coins and movie poster of the 30-40’s in a place called ‘Mutton Street’.
There is a special street which is famous for vehicle spare parts irrespective of the vehicle’s model every possible spare part is found here. Many people flock to Chor Bazaar including foreign tourist who are fascinated by the Brass articles displayed in the market.
It is even said that whatever article you are looking for is always found in ‘Chor Bazaar’
