Escalating the attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks in Dhaka and that of other leaders, Pakistan’s Senate on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution, condemning the “provocative and hostile” statements which, it said, reflect the Indian “hegemonic mindset”.

Accusing India of destabilising Pakistan, former military ruler Pervez Musharraf has said nuclear weapons are for the defence of the country and not for “celebratory” occasion.

“We do not want to use nuclear capability but if our existence comes under threat, who do we have these nuclear weapons for? If I say in Chaudhary Shujaat’s style, do we have nukes saved to be used on Shab-e-Baraat?” he told Dunya News .

“Don’t attack us, don’t challenge our territorial integrity because we are not a small power, we’re a major and nuclear power. Don’t push us,” the 71-year-old Musharraf said.

The resolution, moved by Leader of the House Raja Zafarul Haq, said such “crude attempts” by India are unacceptable and Pakistan rejects this “hegemonic mindset”.

The resolution condemned the recent “disturbing pattern of provocative and hostile” statements by Indian leaders including threatening attacks against Pakistani territory.

Pakistan will never allow its territory to be violated by India under any pretext, it said.

Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore had said in the wake of the military action in Myanmar that it was a message to other countries. This was interpreted as a warning to Pakistan.

Pakistan’s resolution stated that its armed forces are fully capable of giving a befitting response to any incursion and its citizens stand shoulder to shoulder with their armed forces, Radio Pakistan reported.
