V Rishi Kumar Power consumption in the metropolis of Hyderabad has registered its peak demand surge to 3,276 MW this year, up from 2,950 MW last year.

Registering a growth of about 10 per cent over last year, the consumption is more than what is consumed by all the North-East States put together, according to D Prabhakar Rao, Chairman and Managing Director of TS Transco and TS Genco.

Demand from industries

The demand growth was mainly due to increase in consumption from the industrial sector within the city precincts, IT sector, big surge in commercial connections and domestic consumers.

When the Telangana State was carved out in 2014, Hyderabad had 37.8 lakh low-tension consumers and this has grown to 47.8 lakh connections, registering a growth of 27 per cent.

In the case of high-tension consumers, the number has gone up from 5,067 to 7,015, a growth of 39 per cent.

The CMD attributed the surge in growth to the overall economic growth.
