The President has given assent to The Karnataka Land Grabbing (Prohibition) Bill, 2011.

Briefing reporters after a Cabinet meeting, State Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister TB Jayachandra said, “The State government received an official communication this morning on the approval of the Bill, which has been pending for several years.”

Special courts

Under the new Act, the State government will set up three special courts to try land grab cases.

The Bill was introduced and passed unanimously in both Houses of Legislature.

“During my visits to New Delhi, I met the Union Law Minister and the Union Home Minister twice in this connection and followed it up regularly,” Jayachandra said.

Dharnas

The assent has come at a time when several social activists led by freedom fighter HS Doreswamy were holding dharna for a month. The social activist in Bangalore staged a 38-day Satyagraha seeking tough measures against land grabbers.

The dharna was withdrawn on Thursday and a ‘Victory Day’ was observed in the wake of state government accepting their demand to launch a crackdown on land grabbers.
