Private bus operators in Kerala have announced an indefinite strike from May 5 for fare hikes.
The Kerala Bus Operators Confederation has asked the government to raise the minimum fare to ₹10 from the current ₹ 6. The operators also want to increase the concessional fare for school and college students.
Bus fare in Kerala is currently the highest in South India. The minimum fare of ₹ 6 is also high compared with those in many States. Bus operators claim that the cost of operation in Kerala is one of the highest in the country because of the high wages of the crews, hefty taxes and fuel surcharges.
The government-owned Kerala State Road Transport Corporation has been running in loss for years.
