President R N Kovind has appointed Sunil Arora as the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), who will assume charge effective December 2. He will succeed the current CEC Om Prakash Rawat who retires on December 1.
Arora, a former 1980 IAS batch of Rajasthan cadre, was appointed as an EC in September last year. As the CEC, he will be on the hot seat as he would be overseeing the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections which are anticipated to be fiercely fought between the BJP and the opposition parties, which are expected to stitch together a combine.
As a bureucrat, he has served in various positions at the Central level besides at the state level in his home state. In his last stint as a bureucrat, he served as the Secretary in the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting before retiring in April 2016.
In the past, he also served as the Secretary of Ministry of Skill Development & Entreprenuership. Arora is also known for spearheading administrative and policy reforms to revitalise the then Indian Airlines as its Chairman and Managing Director from 2000 to 2005 and the airlines registered a net profit after many years under his watch.
Post his retirement, he was appointed as an Advisor to Prasar Bharti and later as Director General & CEO of the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs.
