The Tamil Nadu government has launched low priced cement branded 'Amma' Cement to protect people from increasing prices.
According to an official press release 'Amma’ Cement sales was launched today in Tiruchi at ₹190 a bag through the Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation. Sales commenced in five godowns of the TNCSC and will be rolled out in stages with the low priced cement available across the state from 470 outlets.
Amma Cement is priced at nearly half that sold in the open market. According to the Builders Association of India figures, cement is sold at a retail price of ₹375 a bag of 50 kg in the open market.
A maximum of 750 bags for house construction of 1,500 sq. ft will be available for the cement buyers at the rate of 50 bags of cement for every 100 sq. ft. For repairs and modernisation, buyers can take between 10 and 100 bags.
Cement for the scheme will be procured from private cement companies which will supply two lakh tonnes of cement each, according to the release.
Tamil Nadu Cements Corporation has been appointed the nodal agency for the scheme to be implemented by the TNCSC. Cement will also be available thorugh District Supply and Marketing Societies which can stock a maximum of 400 bags at a time. Houses constructed under the government housing schemes will also get low priced cement.
