Harrisons Malayalam, Woodbriar, Chamraj, Kanan Devan Hills and a couple of other plantations have returned year after year with the The Golden Leaf India Award (TGLIA). The eleventh edition of Southern Tea Competition award was no different.

The awards were declared in Mumbai on Saturday, after the final tasting session.

The 55 shortlisted teas that qualified the first and second level of screening were evaluated by a jury comprising tea tasters, major buyers, packeteers and exporters. V Unnikrishnan, Convener, TGLIA said that Woodbriar Group and Joonktollee Tea & Industries Limited won six awards each, Hittakkal Group won five awards, Harrisons Malayalam Limited-RP Sanjiv Goenka Group won four awards, United Nilgiri Tea Estates Company Limited won three, Kanan Devan Hills Plantations Company Private Limited, Kodanad Estate, TANTEA, Bluegate Beverages (P) Limited, Poabs Organic Products Private Limited and Darmona Tea Industry bagged one award each.

Coinciding with the TGLIA, there was a B2B session in which a number of sellers from South India and buyers from Maharashtra and Gujarat participated. Speaking to BusinessLine , N Dharmaraj, Vice-President, United Planters’ Association of Southern India (UPASI) said the organisers are planning to get an accredited panel of jury to stamp the award winning TGLIA teas every quarter, to ensure they have critical volumes for supply through the year.

“The backup quantity of the award-winning teas is there, but the volumes are not sufficient. So, we are contemplating to do it on a quarterly basis”, Dharmaraj explained.
