Tamil Nadu has submitted 12 smart city plans to the Ministry of Urban Development, an official statement said on Tuesday.
These include Tiruchirapalli, Tirunelveli, Dindigul, Thanjavur, Tiruppur, Salem, Vellore, Coimbatore, Madurai, Erode, Thoothukudi and Chennai, it added.
The state could not submit the proposals within the December 15 deadline on account of being pre-occupied with management of floods in the state.
With this, 97 cities out of the 98 included in the smart cities mission have submitted plans to the Centre. While Telananga wants to replace Hyderabad with another city, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir are still to nominate one city each.
The Ministry of Urban Development has already set up three teams of two experts each for evaluation.
At the end of the evaluation process, the first batch of smart cities to be financed during this financial year would be announced in January.
