RBI Governor Urjit Patel’s resignation surprised the leaders of various Opposition parties, who were meeting here on Monday. Talking to reporters after the meeting, Congress President Rahul Gandhi said, in the middle of the meeting they were told that the RSS-BJP agenda is progressing further and the RBI chief has resigned because he can no longer work with the government.
Gandhi said the government is getting more desperate. “The government is taking measures that are dangerous for our country. The RBI Governor has resigned because he is protecting the institution of RBI and he is not able to function. Taking way the reserves from the RBI to save your skin, to atone for the sins you have committed and to try and fix the your mismanagements, is an act that is against this nation. I am very proud that people in all walks of life in all institutions are now standing up, saying that this is not going to be tolerated. We’re not going to tolerate what is happening in the CBI, RBI and every other institution in the country, all of us are saying this in one voice,” the Congress President added.

Mamata Banerjee reacts
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said Patel’s resignation was a matter of great shock. “Institutions, from the CBI to the RBI, have become total disasters. This has never happened before. It is a matter of great shock. We must protest,” she said. “The BJP is behaving like a dictator. There should be a campaign against this rule. Everybody has agreed to that,” she said and added, “There is no financial stability... financial emergency has started.”
CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury termed the development as the destruction of another institution by Narendra Modi government. “India’s economy has been wrecked by Modi, and now perhaps wants to raid RBI reserves for petty gains,” he said.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu naidu also said that the resignation was a result of the attacks on institutions. “He tried his best to protect the economy, protect the nation in the interest of the public. Finally, he was unable to bear that stress and he resigned,” Naidu said.
