The West Bengal Government is planning to set up its pumped storage power plant in Purulia for excess power produced during the winter season.
A pumped storage scheme is basically a hydropower project that does not generate “fresh’’ electricity.
Water is pumped up in the storage system using electricity available during lean periods. Once the system is full, water is discharged and electricity is produced just like a regular storage-based hydropower plant.
According to Malay Kr. De, principal secretary, state power department, a detailed project report is being prepared in this regard. The project will have the capacity to store 1,000 MW of power and will entail an investment of nearly Rs 2,500 crore.
This will be the state’s second pumped storage power project. The previous project too is located in Purulia and has a capacity of nearly 900 MW.
