CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury on Tuesday wondered why Prime Minister Narendra Modi had claimed that it was he who facilitated Muslim women’s travel for Haj without a ‘Mahram’ (a male relative a woman is forbidden from marrying).
Speaking at CPI(M)’s State conference in Karnataka, Yechury said the reality was that Saudi Arabian laws, which did not allow women to perform Haj solo, had been changed in 2015. Why is the Prime Minister taking credit for the measure now, Yechury asked. The PM had made the claim during his monthly radio address.
On the issue of triple talaq, he said that CPIM has always opposed instant and arbitrary divorce.
