Non-alcoholic fatty liver, Hepatitis B and C have been highlighted as the three killer diseases of liver.

Lifestyle modifications, such as weight loss, increased exercise, getting a good night’s sleep, and eating healthy foods aid in improving the general liver condition.

Experts have recommended a loss of nine to 10 per cent of body weight and moderate exercise three to five times a week to help reduce the risk. Exercise coupled with a moderate caloric-restricted diet utilising low-glycaemic foods is optimal for preventing.

A conference hosted by Apollo Health City on Liver diseases highlighted epidemic proportions liver ailments are reaching and ways to combat the disease.

As a part of the Apollo medical education programme on ‘Changing perceptions and scenarios in liver diseases – Clinical data to clinical practice in 2013,’ latest therapeutic options in combating the liver diseases were highlighted.

Sangita Reddy, Executive Director, Apollo Hospitals, highlighted the alarming increase in the incidence of the liver diseases among the population and various treatment options that can treat them successfully.

All the three diseases are reversible if treated in time and therefore needs mass awareness on prevention and early detection.

Obesity is a cause of concern amongst the youth of India, due to their sedentary lifestyles, consumption of junk fatty foods, with no exercise regimen. One of the major outcomes of obesity is non alcoholic liver disease.

Gastroenterologist Asha Subbalakshmi said non alcoholic fatty liver disease can reach epidemic proportions in the years to come with improper lifestyles our youth is tempted to adopt, today.
