Mumbai-based Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has developed a high quality face mask using high-efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter which is expected to be cost-effective.
Besides, ARC scientists have developed a protocol for radiation sterilisation which will make possible re-use of pesonal protective equipment (PPE) used by frontline corona warriors such as doctors and other medical and paramedical personnel, said Jitendra Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) in PMO.
Singh, who is in charge of Space and Atomic Energy departments, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is considering making the protocol a SOP (standard operating procedure). The Minister said the government has identified locations for manufacturing RT-PCR kits, which are cheaper and are expected to analyse samples relatively faster.
He also said as part of the Rs 20 lakh crore package announced recently, the government plans to set up irradiation plants across the country to prolong the shelf life of variety of fruits and vegetables.
