The Indian team cricket captain Virat Kohli , who scored big runs with his bat, also scored big on Twitter during 2017. He witnessed 61 per cent growth in the number of followers on Twitter during the year. The number increased to around 20.8 million on December 5 as against 12.9 million at the end of 2016.

However, Prime Minister Narendra Modi retained the number 1 position in terms of number of followers on Twitter. His followers count stood at 37.5 million on December 5, as against 24.6 million, recording a growth of 52 per cent in the number of followers.

With 52.66 per cent growth in the number of followers, Bollywood star Akshay Kumar reached the top-5 club of twitter accounts with highest number of followers. The number of followers stood at 22.9 million as on December 5 as against 15 million a year ago. Of the top 10 accounts with most number of followers, one belonged to the Prime Minister, two to the cricketers and the rest to Bollywood actors. Of the 10, only Deepika Padukone was the most followed woman on Twitter in India.

Cricket

Twitter, which has released trends and hashtags across India for 2017, said that four of the top 10 hashtags were related to cricket during 2017. They are: #IPL, #ct17, #wwc17 and #indvpak. This year, there was a spike in interest around the performance of women’s cricket team.

The hashtag #WWC17 became the most tweeted hashtag for women's sports in India. The conversations on Twitter were reflective of the nation’s growing interest in the women’s cricket community, which has historically been dominated by men, Twitter said in a release here.

The India-Pakistan final clash in Champions Trophy cricket saw 1.8 million tweets with the hashtag #INDvPAK.

Golden tweet

Tamil actor Suriya Sivakumar’s (@Suriya_offl) tweet unveiling the second look for his Tamil film, Thaana Serndha Kootam (A group formed by itself) became the most re-tweeted tweet or ‘Golden Tweet’ of 2017 in the country. This tweet had recorded more than 69,500 re-tweets till December 5.

The hashtag of the Tamil movie Mersal emerged as the top hashtag trend of the year. #Mersal crossed over 1.7 million tweets in three days. In fact, Mersal was also the first ever Tamil movie to get a custom Twitter emoji.

GST, DE-MO

Twitter said that conversations on the platform also echoed the nation’s interest and growing activism towards addressing important issues such as the implementation of goods and services tax (GST), first year anniversary of demonetisation, jallikattu, Indian Presidential elections, and Supreme Court’s ban on triple talaq.

In fact, the hashtag #TripleTalaq crossed more than 3.50 lakh tweets on August 22 following the Supreme Court’s verdict on ‘triple talaq’, it said.
