Sustainability is a tricky theme to stick to if you are looking to create a stand-out product at the same time. In the world of personal gadgets ‘Being Green’ has often meant seeking solace in the familiar confines of glass and aluminium. Too many brands now look uncomfortably close to each other because of this predictable trend.

House of Marley is one brand that has consciously attempted to make a statement with the eco-credentials of its audio products without sacrificing quality.

In fact, House of Marley’s products stick to the original basic elements of sound quality with wood being the material of choice for the enclosures of most of its audio products – even its earphones. Tastefully finished, curved and polished wood facades have become the trademark of the brand. The portable Get Together speakers, which landed on our test bench, is a classic example.

Design Featuring bamboo wood front and rear panels, the Get Together also sports another one of the brand’s proprietary materials. Called Rewind fabric, the rest of the speaker is clothed in this ‘earth-friendly’ material – a combination of cotton, hemp and recycled plastic bottles. The fabric looking very much like grey denim, gives the Get Together a very retro look. Simple rubberised click buttons at the top of the speaker offer controls for volume, Bluetooth pairing and power.

The rear panel of the speaker is clean with just a bass port and the connectivity options – USB, DC charging socket, an aux-in and a battery indicator. Overall, the design is trademark House of Marley with clean, machined, stained and polished bamboo wood face. Bare speaker slots with the cones being visible and the House of Marley logo between them gives this speaker a raw, yet classy look.

Performance The primary drivers in the Get Together are twin three-and-half inchers. Tweeters on either side handle the higher frequencies. Bass levels are predictably lower than some of the larger speakers from House of Marley. But a tight mid-range from the speakers means that the sound stage can be convincing when vocals and stringed instruments dominate the track. So, western classical and country music were particularly pleasing to hear from out of our trial tracks collection.

The Get Together doesn’t manage room filling music, but this unit is meant to be ultra-portable and useful for a family or a small group of people to stream and enjoy their music. The brand’s Get Up Stand Up speakers will be the ones to choose for creating a larger sound stage.

Bottomline The Get Together is still capable of producing a rich experience that defies its size. By that we mean that it can be loud with minimal loss in richness levels at high volumes. But it has size limitations and connectivity is an issue. For its price, a Bluetooth only wireless connectivity option is a bit limiting. And, the wireless protocol is a compromise for a purist. We didn’t have any dropped connections, but static and interferences did surface every once in a while. The battery lasted up to 7-8 hours of use.
