The Supreme Court today gave the green signal for the Centre to evaluate tender bids starting tomorrow from the private sector for the provision of basic telecom services in the country. It stayed an order of the Kohima Bench of the Guwahati High Court restraining the Government from opening the tenders. A vacation Division Bench, comprising Mr. Justice N. P. Singh and Mr. Justice M. K. Mukherjee, which passed the stay order on a special leave petition by the Government against the HC order, however, made it clear that the Department of Telecommunications was entitled to process the tenders but the result will be subject to the outcome of various petitions by the employee unions challenging the tender policy.

Bank officers to sign wage pact today

The Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and the All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC) will sign the third five-year wage revision agreement here on Friday which would hike pay by 10.5 per cent. The AIBOC President. Mr. S. R. Sengupta told presspersons that this would result in a Rs. 283-crore escalation in the wage bill. The agreement, effective from November 1, 1992, would benefit 2,44,577 officers in the banking industry, about 2,33,000 in the public sector and the rest in the private sector.

HC cancels bail to Rajan Pillai

The division bench of the Kerala High Court cancelled the bail granted to NRI business magnate, Mr. Rajan Pillai, by the Additional CJM of Thiruvananthapuram observing that the magistrate had acted beyond his jurisdiction. The case was referred to the bench by Mr. Justice Narayana Kurup of the High Court who had extended the bail granted to Mr. Pillai indefinitely.
