Belagavi Corporation Commissioner G Prabhu walks Anil Urs through the smart city plans. Excerpts from an interview:
What are your priorities under the smart city project?
Infrastructure development so that the city can leverage its strengths to ensure economic growth and employment, and enhance liveability.
How do you plan to decongest the city centre?
We have proposed the development of two city centres with modern markets and supporting facilities, including multi-level parking, a shopping mall atrium, branded goods stores, family entertainment and food courts.
What role will the private sector have?
We have experience in formulating infrastructure projects on PPP format. Other than the development of the city centres, we are exploring generation of renewable power through solar rooftop panelling and wind farms. Energy-efficiency street lighting will also come under PPP.
How will you conserve and promote heritage and culture?
Under the heritage plan, we will develop the water body or the moat around the fort as a heritage park. Within the fort, a district museum is proposed. The ancient temples and mosques inside the fort will also be showcased. About 153 acres of wooded area will be preserved with citizens’ engagement. Kotekari and Kanbargi lakes will be developed and have water sports and laser tech shows.
