Performance Hero Honda sales up 40%
NEW DELHI: Hero Honda Motors Ltd, the world's largest motorcycle maker, on Thursday said April sales rose a robust 40.6 per cent year-on-year to 1,35,961 motorcycles on the back of rising farm incomes and falling vehicle finance rates. The joint venture firm, in which Japan's Honda Motor Co holds 26 per cent equity stake, had sold 96,672 motorcycles in the first month of the last financial year. The Hero group of the Munjal family also holds 26 per cent equity stake in the company, which makes the CD-100, CBZ, Passion, Splendor and Dawn range of motorcycles. March sales were 1,35,464 units, the company said in a statement. Hero Honda, which recorded a 38 per cent year-on-year rise in vehicle sales in 2001-02 at 1.42 million units, is planning to sell 1.8 million motorcycles in the current financial year. Most two-wheeler manufacturers, particularly motorcycle makers such as Bajaj Auto Ltd and TVS Motor Co Ltd reported better sales performance in April as rural India purchases strengthened. Shares of all the leading two-wheeler companies in the country have been advancing in recent times due to better than expected growth in vehicle sales.
