Mining & Quarrying Uranium deposits unearthed in Nalgonda Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, Feb. 18 THE Uranium Corporation of India, a Government of India undertaking, has applied for mining lease with the Mines and Geology Department of the Andhra Pradesh Government, and plans are underway to establish a hydro-metallurgical plant to process the raw ore. Following surveys in the State, uranium deposits have been explored by the Atomic Minerals Division of Uranium Corporation of India in Peddagutta area of P.A. Pally mandal in the Nalgonda district of the State. The total ore reserve is estimated at about 11 million tonnes. Consequently, the Uranium Corporation has applied for grant of mining lease for their Lambapur Pedagutta Uranium project in Nalgonda district. The Government clearance is being processed, according to Mr B.P. Acharya, Principal Secretary and Commissioner of Industries, Government of Andhra Pradesh. This initiative for mining lease is planned to be supported by a hydro-metallurgical plant that will process raw ore. The matter came up in the State Assembly following a question raised by members Mr K. Haribabu and Mr K. Laxman wherein the State Minister for Mines and Geology, Ms Uma Madhav Reddy, said that there were huge reserves of uranium in the Nalgonda district and efforts were on to tap the potential by stepping up mining operations there.
