Aditya Birla hospital coming up near Pune

Our Bureau

Pune , Feb. 26

THE Aditya Birla Foundation on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a 500-bed super speciality hospital, Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital, in Chinchwad, near Pune.

Mr Ashwin Kumar Kothari, trustee of the hospital, told presspersons that an investment of Rs 165 crore was being pooled into the facility. About Rs 100 crore would come in from the Birla Foundation while the group companies would be contributing the rest. The hospital stands on a 16-acre plot. Mr Ashwin said the hospital would be developed in two phases and the first phase is estimated to be completed by July 2005. This phase would cater to about 150 beds and would be increased gradually with an addition of 60 beds at a time.

He said all clinical services would be ready during the first phase. Along with the first phase development, a nursing school would also begin its operations with a student capacity of 50 for degree courses in nursing. It is also proposed to develop post-graduate training for super specialisation for expert nursing services and "that is the only way to stop draining of this precious resource,'' he added.

Mr Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman, Aditya Birla Group, who was present on the occasion, said the hospital would be offering allopathic treatment along with alternative therapies, depending on the profile of the ailment and the recommendation of the specialist doctors. It would house 127 ICUs (intensive care units) and HDU (high dependency unit) for multi-disciplinary acute care and 13 operation theatres.

Mr Birla said a reasonable percentage of beds would be reserved for the weaker sections of the society along with free treatment.
