Hyderabad , July 7

THE Nagarjunasagar Tail Pond Dam, proposed to be set up at Shatrushali in Guntur district at an estimated cost of Rs 464.73 crore, will be completed by 2010, said the State Finance Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah.

Replying to a question on behalf of the Chief Minister at the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, Mr Rosaiah said the Generation Corporation of Andhra Pradesh had proposed to construct the project as part of the Nagarjunasagar Pumped Storage Scheme envisaging a pond for seven reversible pumped turbine units installed at the Nagarjunasagar dam.

The project also entailed the installation of two units of 25 MW capacity hydro generators to generate 235 MU annually at the tail pond dam, using the water released to the downstream Krishna barrage. He said that all clearances were accorded to the project that would have storage capacity of 1.05 TMC.

He, however, said that the exact number of enterprises to be privatised would be known after the Options Study is completed.

In the past five years, he said, 55 enterprises were privatised under PER. As many as 22,433 employees have availed themselves of the voluntary retirement scheme and the Government had introduced Social Safety Net Programme to mitigate the impact of job loss. Counselling and re-training were provided, after which some of the displaced persons have been redeployed.
