Bioinformatics policy draft aims at $2.5-b turnover

Our Bureau

Bangalore , July 14

A NATIONAL bioinformatics policy that is in the making aims to catalyse the emerging industry so as to achieve a turnover of $2.5 billion by the end of the Tenth Plan.

The policy that is being steered by the Department of Biotechnology and includes several stake-holder Ministries should be out in early September, according to Dr A.S. Kolaskar, Vice-Chancellor of Pune University, who heads the coordination committee on the policy.

This would be the first cohesive effort of its kind in the world, Dr Kolaskar said at a session on bioinformatics at the Bangalore Bio 2004 on Tuesday.

The bioinformatics policy will cover all areas converging with biotechnology, such as infotech, medicine, agricultural and industrial research.
