LIFESCAN, a division of the Johnson & Johnson Ltd on Thursday announced the launch of an indigenously developed self-testing kit for diabetes patients. Offered at a price of Rs 1,500, the blood glucose monitor has been developed by LifeScan, in collaboration with leading diabetologists.
LifeScan is a leading producer of blood glucose monitoring systems with one-touch technology for easy management of the ailment.
The `One Touch Horizon' blood glucose meter had been tested on more than 400 patients by as many doctors to evaluate its efficacy, said Dr V. Mohan, President & Director, Madras Diabetes Research Foundation.
The self-diagnostic kit was the result of research done over a period of two years with clinical tests conducted in Chennai and two places in the United Kingdom.
Johnson & Johnson premiered the kit in India and it will be launched in other countries such as the Asia Pacific, Africa and Latin America, apart from Eastern Europe.
Diabetes has a `danger zone,' where serious cardiovascular complications could develop. The blood glucose levels could be in the danger zone even if the person with diabetes feels fine. Thus it is important that a regular monitoring of blood sugar level is done to overcome the deceptive attacks the patients suffer from.
About 32 million people are estimated to be afflicted with diabetes in the country. However, less than one per cent of such patients do self-monitoring due to low awareness of the concept and lack of affordable self- diagnostic kit.
