Revamp postal services

The provision in the annual Budget to permit IT-related small savings to be mobilised by banks is the ideal platform for the post-offices to revamp their functions.

To improve business and beat the competition thrown up by the private courier services, causing erosion in the business volume of the post offices, I would like to suggest the following.

The post-office network should be effectively used to market financial products such as mutual funds, insurance, home loans, investments, and so on. Post-offices in the residential areas should be open from 8 a.m.till 8 p.m. .

Certain main post-offices, if not all, in the metropolitan centre should open on Sundays to enable putting through transactions that are not possible by office-goers during week-days.

The delivery schedule should be by way of shifts in the early morning and late evening so that inmates are available during the delivery period.
