The Hindu Business Line : <I>BL Club</I> launched in Vellore

A thought-provoking lecture and an interaction on job reservation in the private sector were the highlights of the inauguration of the Business Line (BL) Club in the Department of Management Sciences (DMS), Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT).

Launching the club and delivering the special guest lecture here today, the Associate Editor of Business Line, Mr D. Sampathkumar, said political parties sought reservation in the private sector as a means of restitution of rights, which were denied to the Dalits and other backward classes centuries ago.

But, it is a moot point whether such reservation would reduce the unemployment problem in the targeted section, given the fact that the new economic policy (NEP) has not created many jobs. As against the 35 million unemployed people in the country, only 8,00,000 new jobs have been created in the private sector after the introduction of NEP, he said.

Delivering the presidential address, the Chancellor of VIT, Mr G. Viswanathan, wondered whether, in the light of the moves to attract FDI in India, the Union Government was going to ask foreign companies to provide reservation in jobs.

"Are you going to send out those companies which defy the reservation rules?" he asked. Many such questions need to be answered before the Government takes a decision on the issue, Mr Viswanathan said, and urged the BL Club to take up the issue of reservation in the private sector seriously in their discussions.

Mr S. Sridhar, Senior Assistant Regional Manager, The Hindu, Chennai, said the club would provide a forum to the students of the department to interact with corporate professionals.
