Events Sukhois fighter steals Mumbai air show Our Bureau

Mumbai , Oct. 17 "EVEN the birds have stopped to stare," the commentator remarked as fighter aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) looped, tumbled and barrel-rolled before a packed Marine Drive audience here on Sunday evening. The IAF team put up a scintillating display of its pilots' dare-devilry and manoevourability of its fighter jets at the Mumbai Airshow 2004 held over the Queen's Necklace of the Mumbai bay. The air-show organised jointly with Air India showcased fighter planes such as Sukhoi-30 MKIs, MiGs, IL-78 mid-air refuellers and the indigenously built advanced light helicopters. The planes flew in breathtaking formations, fought mock battles and staged various stunts to regale an audience of about six lakh people that had thronged the entire stretch of Marine Drivefor the show that has become an integral part of Mumbai's events calendar now. The `Suryakiran' display team of aircraft and the `Sarang' display team of helicopters were the highlights of the evening but the Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft and its bird-like agility literally stole the show.
